VDA Background

Vulindlela Development Association (VDA) is a community based organisation (CBO),registered as a section 21 company. It has a Board of Directors made up of the five Amakhosi, and a Senior Induna. The role played by Amakhosi in the organisation is not just another extension of a function of being an Inkosi in the community. Amakhosi and other members carry the ultimate responsibility of ensuring that the interest of the beneficiaries are protected at all times and for the proper running of the project.

The CBO operates within the Vulindlela area, in Pietermaritzburg. Vulindlela is located within uMgungundlovu District Municipality and covers nine (9) Wards within the Vulindlela Traditional Council area under the leadership of five (5) Chiefs (Amakhosi). The project area also falls within the identified Traditional Council areas of Kwa-Mafunze, E-Mpumuza, I-Nadi, Kwa-Ximba, and Kwa-Nxamalala. A vast majority of the inhabitants reside in dwellings ranging from wattle and daub, tin shacks to formal block and tile structures with a number of homesteads engaged in subsistence farming practices.
